VICE CHANCELLORS, PROVOSTS, AND DEANS:

Since its instroduction in 1997, the UCLA BruinCard has proven to be a valuable campus resource.  This photo ID card is linked electronically to key UCLA student and employee databases, and now serves as a student registration card, a library card, a debit card, a security access card, an employee time entry card, and a recreation center card, among other varied uses.  Currently, all of our students have the BruinCard, considered UCLA's official student identification card.

In addition, 66 percent of all faculty and staff have chosen to have the card.  They, like our students, have discovered the convenience of having one card that can be used to access many campus services.  After depositing funds in their BruinCard accounts, students and employees alike can make purchases at campus stores and restaurants, and more than 20 businesses in the Westwood area.  The card also serves as a transit pass to ride the Santa Monica Bus Lines at no cost as part of the BruinGo program.  Moreover, many campus departments have selected the BruinCard as their official ID card for faculty and staff.  The Medical Center has integrated the BruinCard into its new ID badges.

At this time of heightened awareness about security, I am advising all faculty and staff to obtain a BruinCard and to carry it as a campus photo identification card.  Whether it is used to access campus services, to make payments, or to identify the bearer as UCLA faculty or staff, the BruinCard is accepted as the campus standard.

I have asked Assistant Vice Chancellor Susan Abeles and her staff to develop a convenient process that will enable faculty and staff to obtain their BruinCard.  In the attached memorandum to Chief Administrative Officers, she outlines this process.  In the meantime, I hope you will make this initiative known to your respective staffs and encourage their participation.

                                                                                     Sincerely,

                                                                                      Albert Carnesale
                                                                                      Chancellor
